Awards Honour Local Sport

Image of the cheque being presented to Tameside TalentTameside Talent was one of 12 regional winners in Norwich Union's 2007 Join Our Team campaign.

The winners were chosen via an online initiative which invited the nation to join the team and vote to donate money to over 200 sporting groups, clubs and organisations across the UK.

Thanks to the public, each sporting group received enough votes to win the Silver Award, the regional prize, and will receive £12,500 worth of funding to help shape the future of the initiative.

Tameside Talent is a project designed to ensure that talented young people in Tameside are identified and have the opportunity to reach their full potential in PE and sport. The strategy brings together programmes and expertise from sports development, school sport partnerships, sports colleges and community clubs.

The strategy includes a talent pathway which provides young performers, leaders and potential coaches with provision and support to develop and nurture their potential talents. The pathway is also inclusive, providing opportunities for talented young people with a disability.

Over £500,000 has been made available this year by Norwich Union, the team behind UK Athletics, to help fund delivery of improved sports facilities, equipment, training and specialist programmes for young people of all capabilities in local communities throughout the UK.

Voting took place on a dedicated website – www.joinourteam.com Link to External Website - where details of all the local initiatives and regional leader boards can be found. Supporters registered their vote up until 16th September 2007 when the final votes were counted.

Tanya Veingard, Head of Sponsorship, Norwich Union, said: "Norwich Union is committed to supporting sport at a grassroots level with the aim of getting 10 million children active by 2012. Over the next five years we're giving the nation the chance to have their say and pledge their support for sport in their community. By simply casting a vote on our website, people were able to join the team and make a real difference to initiatives across the UK, by helping them win vital funds to support their work."

Olympic gold medallists Sally Gunnell and Darren Campbell will be among the judges selecting the national winner who will be announced at an awards ceremony in London on Saturday (10th November 2007).

Gunnell, said: “The prize money won by local initiatives will have a big impact on participation in sport across the country. People of all ages and abilities will benefit from new and upgraded facilities, better staffing and equipment as well as more opportunities to participate. Any scheme that encourages sport at a local level should be both encouraged and celebrated.”
