Tameside Awarded Top Rating

Please note: From May 2010 the Government abolished CAA. There will be no further CAA judgments/ scores published by the Joint Inspectorate.
Tameside Council is one of only two in the country to get the top score in all three organisational categories in the latest Comprehensive Area Assessment 2009
.
The authority scored a maximum four for Managing Performance and Use of Resources - which cannot be surpassed – which combined to give Tameside an overall maximum four score for its Organisational Assessment.
The assessment is split in to two categories: the Area Assessment which concentrates on what the Tameside Strategic Partnership
has achieved, while the Organisational Assessment is based solely on what the council has achieved.
The Audit Commission’s
Tameside Council’s assessment said.
“Overall Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council performs excellently. The quality of services is generally excellent, including in areas important to local people. The council is excellent at managing its money and delivering services which meet the needs of local people.”
What has the council been recognised for? The way in which it has improved the quality of life for Tameside residents, scoring a maximum of four out of four for the way in which we manage our performance and the way in which they utilise resources
What does this mean? Tameside has now scored the top four mark for Use of Resources for three consecutive years, despite the fact it faces continuing hardening assessment and increasing financial constraints. So far Tameside believes it is the only local authority in the north of England to perform so well.
Why does this matter? Tameside’s residents and businesses can be assured that the council is performing at the highest possible level. The main reason they continue to perform so well is that they are never complacent and are always looking to improve the quality of life for the borough’s residents.
One prime example of this is the authority’s continued efforts to, not only keep Council Tax rises to a minimum, but to also publish details of a three-year rise, so residents know what they will be paying for years to come. This success was recently highlighted in a national tabloid newspaper which had worked out that Tameside has had the third lowest Council Tax rise over the last 10 years anywhere in the country.
The Audit Commission said of Tameside:
“The council is an efficient and well run organisation. It knows what it wants to deliver and will move money to where it is needed or change the way services are run. It is very good at spotting problems and reacting to fix them. The council takes positive and often innovative action to address under performance and will take difficult decisions.”
Council Executive Leader, Cllr Roy Oldham, said: “It is easy to see how we could have achieved such an impressive score. We are an efficient, well-run organisation which has a variety of innovative projects up and running at any one time to help our residents, for example our Tameside Works First initiative. The TWF project captures how the council uses its resources effectively in order to achieve positive outcomes for people and businesses across the borough.”
Chief Executive Steven Pleasant, added: “But it goes without saying that such an excellent score could not have been achieved without the help and support of you, our staff. It is you who have made this the success story it is and your hard work which has been recognised by the Audit Commission.”
