Recycling: Waste not want not
Waste not want not
Press Release Date: 31 August 2010

Householders can now help to remove food waste from costly landfill by recycling it in their brown bin.
Tameside Council has launched the initiative to help the borough achieve its target of a 40 per cent recycling rate.
The average household currently throws away the equivalent of eight black bins of leftovers and food waste every year. Not only is sending waste to landfill bad for the environment, it is very costly to the council tax payer.
The council has been running an ongoing ‘Love Food Hate Waste’ campaign to encourage people to reduce the amount of food they throw away. But when leftovers are unavoidable, residents now have an easy means of recycling them.
Residents who already self-compost appropriate food waste can of course continue to do so. But, as part of a revamp of all the disposal facilities across Manchester, Tameside has part funded the building of an In Vessel Composter which can process all food waste - including raw meat and processed foods - and turn it into compost or soil enhancer.
Executive Member for Environmental Services, Cllr Catherine Piddington, said: “Our aim is to make it easy and convenient for people to recycle as much as their waste as possible.
“Putting your food waste in your brown bin is yet another way you can do your bit to help improve Tameside’s recycling rates, which in turn will benefit the environment as well as save council tax payers’ money. That way we can enjoy clean plates all round.”
Tameside already offers facilities for recycling glass, plastic bottles, cans, garden waste, paper, cardboard and drinks cartons. For more information on recycling your food waste or recycling in general call the council on 0161 342 8355 or visit our website at www.tameside.gov.uk/recycling
