Brass Band Contest
Friday, 16th May 2008

Coach loads of bands travelled to Tameside on Friday for the annual Tameside Whit Friday Brass Band Contest. Brass Bands from around the country toured the ten Tameside contests in hot pursuit of winning the Tameside Open and Local Whit Friday Championship prizes. A cool £13,000 was up for grabs from the individual contests with an additional £6,000 from the Council for the overall contest winners. That means a total of nearly £20,000 was up from grabs within the Borough. Top bands such as Fodens Richardson and Faireys were heard, plus many of Tameside’s own local bands such as Ashton-under-Lyne, Stalybridge Old Band, Denton Brass, and Carrbrook.
Both young and old joined in with the excitement of another fantastic evening. Bands travelled by coach from contest to contest in the early evening sunshine and what an evening it turned out to be! Contest organisers, who work extremely hard throughout the year fundraising for the evening, were delighted to have such a beautiful weather. Thousands of people flocked to various venues around the Borough. Everybody was out to enjoy this traditional evening of entertainment and brass band music making of the highest standard.
In order to achieve the award of 'Tameside Whit Friday Champions', bands have to perform at SIX of the aforementioned ten contests. So, not only does the contest test the bands musical prowess, it also tests their discipline, stamina and organisational skills, with bands constantly on the move in their quest for the 'Tameside Whit Friday Champions' crown.
It turned out to be another amazing year for Fodens Richardson, who took the title of Tameside Whit Friday Open Champions for an outstanding sixth year running! Local band, Ashton-under-Lyne, were not disappointed either, taking away 1st prize in the Tameside Local Champions.
