Praise for Tameside’s Woodlands

Cllr Jackie Lane with 2 children in one of Tamesides WoodlandTameside’s countryside team have proved they can certainly see the wood from the trees.

Their first class management of the borough’s 18 woodlands – some of which are more than 400 years old – has been recognised by the UK Woodland Assurance Standard.

The prestigious accreditation acknowledges the service’s commitment to managing the woods sustainably while making them as accessible as possible for local people to enjoy.

Rangers have detailed management plans for each wood - which include Great Wood, an ancient woodland in Broadbottom; Haughton Dale in Denton and; Knott Hill Reservoir in Ashton. Their priorities include minimum use of pesticides and the sourcing of materials for such things as seating and pathways from sustainable supplies.

They engage volunteers from all age groups who help with their conservation work while learning about local wildlife. And they provide a wide programme of recreational events and activities to encourage people to venture out and make the most of the local countryside.

Cllr Jackie Lane, Tameside Council's Head of Heritage and Tourism, said: “We work very hard to find the balance between safeguarding the natural habitat in our woodlands while ensuring they are as accessible as possible for recreational use. We are delighted to receive this recognition that we are doing a good job which, at the same time, should open up new opportunities for external funding for future projects.”
