Tameside Youth Brass Festival
Youngsters from the World of Brass Flock to Tameside
Sunday 23rd November 2008
Sunday 23rd November, the Borough held its twelfth Youth Brass Festival, sponsored by Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council.
This year the event was held at a new venue, Dukinfield Town Hall, and the prestigious building hosted an exciting contest that attracted hundreds of spectators throughout the afternoon, with the standard of music, the atmosphere and professionalism of the bands keeping both young and old enthralled throughout.
Nine youth bands from the world of brass competed in the contest adjudicated by Stephen Brodie, battling it out for total prize money of £3,100.
The Civic Mayor & Mayoress of Tameside, Councillor Jack Davis and Mrs. Carole Davis were in attendance to make the presentations, with First Prize and a cheque for £1,000 awarded to Youth Brass 2000, conducted by Peter Collins.
Youth Brass 2000’s programme commenced with Duke Ellington’s ‘Caravan’, before flugel player Alice Norman played ‘Doyle’s Lament’ from ‘Call of the Cossacks’. Following on from ‘Volero’, the band’s Principal Euphonium, Sarah Lenton, performed ‘A Little Prayer’, before the band concluded with ‘Shine as the Light’. The title of 2008 Tameside Youth Brass Champions came after the band finished runners-up in the 2007 contest.
Second Prize went to Poynton Youth under Andy Hirst and third place went to Bare Trees Community Band from Oldham, who made their debut at a youth contest.
Individual trophies were also awarded for best Cornet, Horn, Euphonium, Trombone, Bass and Percussion and an award was given to the youngest player, Emily Collins, aged 8 of Bare Trees Community.
This event represented the conclusion of a programme of brass band music for 2008, which began with the Tameside Open Championships last March and the recently staged British Open Solo & Quartet Championships.
