Tameside Youth Brass Festival

Youngsters from the World of Brass Flock to Tameside

Sunday 25th November 2007

On Sunday, 25th November, the Borough of Tameside held its eleventh Youth Brass Festival, sponsored by Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council.

Tameside Hippodrome played host to the event, which attracted hundreds of spectators throughout the afternoon, with the standard of music, the atmosphere and professionalism of the bands keeping both young and old enthralled.

Eleven youth bands from the world of brass competed in the contest, adjudicated by Richard Marshall, battling it out for total prize money of £3,400.

The Civic Mayor & Mayoress of Tameside, Councillor Mike Smith and Mrs Teresa Smith were in attendance to make the presentations, with First Prize and a cheque for £1,000 awarded to Sellers International Youth Band, conducted by Mark Bousie. Playing tenth out of the eleven competing bands, Sellers’ programme included two Peter Meechan compositions, Fanfare for a Festival and Apex, a cornet solo featuring Joe Murray; Volero, the march Goldcrest, Irish Blessing and the band concluded with The Can Can. Victory at the Tameside Youth Brass Festival concludes a successful year for Sellers, the current British Youth Band Champions. Mark Bousie was delighted to have won and praised his band for their commitment and spirit after what has been ‘a difficult time for everybody’ with the news that the senior band was to fold.

Second Prize went to Youth Brass 2000, Third Prize to Poynton Youth and Fourth Prize to Smithills School. Individual trophies were also awarded for best Cornet, Horn, Euphonium, Trombone, Bass and Percussion and an award was given to the youngest player, Kyle Redfern, aged 9 of Boarshurst Youth Band.

This event represented the conclusion of a programme of brass band music for 2007, which began with the Tameside Open Championships last March and the recently staged British Open Solo & Quartet Championships.
