100 Years of Waste Management in Tameside
Tameside MBC has launched a new awareness campaign to educate and encourage residents to recycle. The campaign was launched in June at a pensioner’s tea party at Dukinfield Town Hall and its aim is to illustrate to residents how waste has changed over the last 100 years in the borough.
The main focal point of the campaign is a refurbished horse drawn refuse vehicle that was originally used to collect ash by Dukinfield Corporation in the early 1900’s. The horse drawn refuse vehicle has visited many towns across the borough promoting the message of waste and recycling and has also taken part in the Black Knight Pageant and Denton Carnival.
The renovation of the cart also captured the interest of the BBC who filmed a live broadcast from Johnson Brook Road in Dukinfield. Their main news item for the day was a feature on recycling and on the horse and cart and included interviews with the Leader of the Council, Councillor Roy Oldham and Head of Environmental Operations, Robin Monk.

The refurbishment of the horse and cart was also a main storyline in a recent television series ‘The Consumer Police’ that was shown on television over the summer. The series was shown during primetime on ITV and Granada bosses were delighted with the viewing figures.
Recycling Officer, Kyle Barnes, took part in the programme said: "I enjoyed the experience of being in front of the camera. Some people say I’m a natural but I’m still waiting for the offer from Hollywood. On a serious note, I hope people got an insight into all the hard work that went into getting our 100-year-old refuse wagon back on the streets of Tameside."
