Recycling Sites for Textiles
New kerbside Textile Collection Trial
Clothing, textiles and shoes account for around 5% of the total contents of the black bin and over a million tonnes of textiles are thrown away every year with only 25% being recycled.
From July 2010 a trial collection service is being undertaken to over 40,000 properties in the borough. The aim of the trial is to capture the material that isn’t wanted by or cannot be used by the charity shops.
Tameside Council working in partnership with I+G Cohen are going to collect these items in White bags which have been supplied to the trial areas.
The textile collection will be on the same day as participants Blue Bin collection day and residents are being asked to present their bag alongside their Blue bin on the specified Blue bin collection days.
Residents who currently take their Textiles to Local charity shops and reuse organisations are still being asked to do so.
We are looking to remove items that would normally be disposed of in the Black bin.
The trial scheme is designed to target the material that is currently being sent to landfill while offering an increased kerbside facility to make it even easier for residents to do their bit!
Do not put your white sack inside your blue bin please
The following items can be recycled using this collection:-
- Clothing
- Paired Shoes
- Bedding / Curtains
- Handbags
- Belts
For residents not covered by the collection trial they can still recycle their unwanted textiles at any of the collection points listed below.
