Kerbcraft Road Safety Scheme

Helping keep your children safe on the Roads

Road accidents involving children unfortunately do happen.

Our aim in Tameside is to reduce this.

Kerbcraft a Practical Road Safety Scheme

Image of a Kerbcraft trainer crossing the road safelyKerbcraft is a practical road safety scheme. The scheme involves John Adams the Co-ordinator and parent volunteers taking small groups of Year 1 children out onto the roads and streets around their school to teach them sensible road safety skills. All trainers and children wear high visibility vests with the Tameside MBC logo printed on them.

The whole class (usually 30 pupils), are included and participate at a set time each week. There is no extra workload for the school or teacher as the co-ordinator manages the scheme, liaising with Head teacher, class teacher and parents to ensure the effectiveness and success of the scheme.

To start with schools are contacted to ascertain their interest and then meetings are arranged with Head teachers and Year 1 staff to give further information and to answer any questions they may have.

Class sessions for each school are then arranged to involve children and to give out information letters. Parents are asked to sign permission slips for their children to participate in the scheme.

Parents are also invited to become volunteer trainers to help educate their children in this important area of road safety. If they are interested they then attend a meeting in school organised by the Co-ordinator where they receive information about the scheme and details of how they could help.

The success of Kerbcraft is based upon the recruitment and retention of volunteers within each school. These are usually parents who have a stake in school and also see that the road safety education of their children is very important.

The key training elements of Kerbcraft are finding safe places to cross the road, crossing at junctions and crossing safely near parked cars when an alternative safe place cannot be found.

The overall philosophy of Kerbcraft is to reduce the number of children injured on the streets and roads of Tameside.

Kerbcraft remains a positive, practical road safety scheme that is well supported by schools and their busy parents who provide the corner stone of dedicated trained volunteers upon which the success of the scheme is built.
