Dinosaur Feet

Photograph of the Dinosaur FeetAs part of the ongoing initiative to prepare School Travel Plans and Safer Routes to School for all schools in Tameside measures to promote walking to school as an alternative to the car and in order to promote healthier lifestyles are being implemented across the borough.

One of these measures is the introduction of Dinosaur Trails to school that are part of a capital works programme to improve and promote the use of safer walking routes to school. Following comprehensive consultation with schools, pupils and parents, walking routes were identified from home to school and complementary measures to improve pedestrian crossings and slow vehicles down along these routes are being implemented.

Photograph of the Dinosaur FeetIn order to encourage children to switch from car to walking, the dinosaur feet were identified as a means of supporting the proposed walking buses, due to start up during the course of this educational year. The dinosaur feet will be complemented by the installation of dropped kerbs, tactile paving and buff coloured road surfacing to highlight to drivers the presence of pedestrians, and warnings to children to stop, look and listen before crossing the road.

The dinosaur feet are, therefore, part of an integrated package of measures aimed at encouraging more pupils and parents to walk to school but more importantly to take a safer route to school and cross roads at appropriate points. The introduction of the Dinosaur Feet is, therefore, considered as a road safety measure in that it guides children to safe crossing points and the long term benefits of these measures will be a reduction in accidents which is a primary objective of the Council.
