1. That the Council ensures that it maintains a regular General and Principal Inspection Programme for its bridges and structures, in accordance with the recommended guidance. |
Action will be taken to maintain the programme. However, the new condition indicator maintenance system, which is about to be introduced nationally, will require changes to the inspection regime and adequate planning. Also the achievement of the inspection programme is a function of the resource provision and availability. |

2. That the Council gives serious consideration to the employment of a designated "Bridge Inspector" and the utilisation of existing inspection staff via appropriate training, in order to improve the slippage in the inspection programme and maintain a regular programme in accordance with recommended guidelines. |
It is intended that additional resources will be made available. However this work will not occupy one dedicated bridge inspector full time undertaking a minimum of 150 inspections, say every 2 years. Therefore this resource has to be managed so that he/she can contribute to other aspects of the Service. Principal inspections are required every 7-10 years. They can be managed as either a one off appointment of a consultant or fitted in to the workload of the service - depending on staff resources other workload priorities etc. |

3. That road signs which indicate height and weight restrictions on the approach to bridges be displayed prominently and in a position which allows the driver to take preventative or alternative action if necessary. |
The Traffic Group has employed external consultants to investigate these signs within Tameside. Any improvements will have to be co-ordinated with the traffic regulation requirements and is subject to budgetary constraint. Regular reports will be provided |

4. That the Council submits a joint bid with Network Rail via the Local Transport Plan, to lower the road surface under the bridge at Scotland Street, Ashton-under-Lyne and widen the road up to the roundabout. |
The first priority of Network Rail and Tameside MBC will be strengthening of Road over Rail Bridges in Tameside. Consideration will be given to inclusion of this proposal in a future LTP submission. |

| 5. That the Council adopts a stringent approach to fly-tipping at the culvert at Halton Street, Hyde and prosecutes any perpetrators. | The engineering service will initially have to improve liaison with the District Assembly, Environmental Health and Tameside Patrollers to ensure this issue is adequately dealt with. This may result in further actions necessary by other Services. Improvements in culvert inspection programmes will also be investigated. | Section Engineer (Bridges) | December 2003 |
|
6. That consideration be given to the introduction of appropriate traffic regulation orders on the bridge at Grove Road, Stalybridge in view of the anticipated possible housing development. |
This structure is in the 2003 - 2005 capital programme when the appropriate strengthening and traffic management measures will be taken. |
