Other Key Achievements
In addition to the above a number of intiative have been undertaken by the Environmenal Health Service:
- Workplace Health Improvement Co-Ordination
A workplace Health Improvement Co-ordinator was appointed, which is a partnership project between Environmental Health, The Primary Care Trust and the Ashton Regeneration Project. This role is to undertake key projects around the Public Health Agenda and is looking at improving the health of the borough by tackling issues such as healthy eating, smoking and alcohol.
- Anti Littering Campaign
During the month of November a campaign against littering across Tameside was launched. Posters were displayed on buses, bins and the entrances to licensed premises across the Borough. The poster included the image of a cigarette end wrapped in a £20 note with the caption "dropping litter is an expensive habbit which carried a fixed penalty of £50 or if found guilty by the courts a fine up to £2,500."
- Violence Initiative with Greater Manchester Police
The Environmental Health Team have commenced a partnership Initiative with Greater Manchester Police. The aims of the project are to reduce acts of violence in small retail businesses abd to detect offenders. A number of businesses have been visited with a Crime Reduction Officer and advise has been given on how to protect their employees and the public from acts of violence.
- Smoke Free Legislation
The Local Authority is key to the success of the smoke free legislation and since its introductions on the 1st July 2007, officers have continued to inspect premises and vehicles to ensure compliance. In addition any complaints made by the general public have also been investigated.
- The Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005
Letter have been sent out to businesses in the music and entertainment sectors, for example, pubs, clubs and restaurants advising them of the new noise regulationswhich come into effect on the 6th April 2008.
The key change is that the two exposure action values at which an employer must take action are being reduced by 5db (A) and 80db (A) and 85db (A). Employers should carry out a risk assessment and where risks are found, employers should develop an action plan to manage them.
Officers will also be raising awareness of the new regulations to dutyholders during routine inspections. The need to work with businesses in order to ensure that they take appropriate steps to protect ther workers in a manner that does not prevent the public from enjoying music or damage the entertainment industry is recognised.
- Safe Tattooing
An advertising campaign was undertaken this year, promoting safe tattooing across Greater Manchester. Posters were displayed on the inside of buses.
