Welcome

Setantii is an exciting museum exploring the history of Tameside from Celtic times to the present day.  Families will love the olden day figures, replica armour and the Anderson air raid shelter with its wartime sound effects.

Visitors can discover how the Celts lived, see the difference between Norman lords and serfs, experience the 15th century market and find out about the Tameside families involved in the Civil War.  Look out for the famous Longdendale Longbow - the type used at the Battle of Agincourt, learn about life in Tameside from the early battles with the Romans through to the industrial and cultural developments of today. Experience wartime Tameside, step inside our Anderson air raid shelter and visit our 1940s kitchen.

Planning a Visit

Setantii is located within Ashton-under-Lyne's impressive Victorian Town Hall. The museum is in easy walking distance of both the bus and railway stations and there is ample public parking in the town centre.  The entrance to the museum is through Tameside Tourist Information Centre or from the Town Hall's main entrance on Ashton marketplace.  The museum is fully accessible if you are a wheelchair user or are visiting with a buggy.  While the museum does not have a café there are many places to find refreshments near to the museum.

There are lots of activities in the museum for you and your family and friends to try. During the school holidays there are self-led art activities available at our craft table and a regular drop-in family workshop that takes place on Wednesdays during school holidays from 11.00am - 3.00pm. During term time the museum offers school workshops on the Romans and World War Two.  Groups always receive a warm welcome. Please telephone 0161 342 2812 to book your visit.

The Museum of the Manchester Regiment is also located in Ashton Town Hall above Setantii and is accessible by lift.

Exhibitions

Embroidered handkerchiefOlder people from Tameside have created artworks for 'Reflections', an exhibition at Setantii, from 5th October 2009 to March 2010. The exhibition is inspired by souvenirs and keepsakes from the collection at the Museum of the Manchester Regiment. The exhibition includes embroidered handkerchiefs, poetry, a display of items that will be sent as gifts to a soldier serving overseas today, and many, many knitted poppies.

Those involved in making work for the exhibition include residents from two New Charter sheltered accommodation schemes; Birchfield House and Ashton House, as well as members of the Knit and Natter group that meet regularly at Central Art Gallery in Ashton.

Wreath made from knitted poppiesThanks to POPPs (Tameside Older People’s Partnership) funding, reminiscence workshops have been taking place across Tameside, using the collections from Tameside Museum & Galleries to spark memories and conversation. The funding has also enabled the set-up of the now established and ever popular Knit and Natter knitting group. The exhibition showcases some of the ideas generated by older people during the reminiscence workshops. It also tells a story of the creativity and resilience of people, who in spite of life’s challenges, retain their optimism and lust for life.
