Mandatory Training

During the assessment process to become a Shared Lives Carer there are a number of mandatory training courses that must be completed;
  • All new Shared Lives carers are now required to complete the Care Certificate (relevant qualifications can be taken into account as evidence of standards met).
  • First Aid
  • Health & Safety
  • Food Safety & Infection Control
  • Safeguarding Adults
  • Mental Capacity Awareness
  • Medication
  • Equality & Diversity
  • CITRUS Awareness

These training courses must be updated every two years to maintain approval.

Training opportunities

Post approval we provide additional training free of charge to help you develop the skills, confidence and knowledge you need to be a good Carer. Our training is accessible through different forms such as e-learning, classroom based learning, one to one work with Shared Lives Workers.

You can also access specialist training, including around learning disabilities, dementia and autism, depending on the service you are offering and the needs of the person placed with you.

Ongoing support

Your Shared Lives worker will be available to support you. We will keep in regular touch with you and also carry out monitoring checks and visits to make sure everything is going well for both you and the person you care for.

We will also give you details of people you can contact in case there is an emergency. Other Carers are often a valuable source of support, and you'll get to meet them during your training and in the course of your work.
