What is Shared Lives?

Shared Lives consists of several different services where vulnerable people have the opportunity to live with or share the daily life of the carer and to have an ordinary domestic life in the same kind of home as others in the local community. Sometimes this can be long-term, sometimes for a short period, or even on a day support basis.

The people who use our the shared lives services have a range of social care needs and may be older people, people with physical and or learning disabilities or people with mental health needs.

We recruit, train, match and support approved individuals or families to act as Shared Lives Carers.

No formal qualifications are expected, and we welcome people from a wide variety of backgrounds, with different skills and life experience. We do look for people to be flexible, sensitive, tolerant and patient with a genuine interest in supporting vulnerable people.

Carers must meet the following criteria:
  • Resident in Tameside
  • Over 18
  • Able to work with vulnerable people
  • For Long Term, Interim, Respite and Emergency placements you must have a spare bedroom.

We'll also look for you to:
  • Show an awareness, understanding and empathy for supporting vulnerable adults
  • Have an understanding and commitment to equality and diversity
