Tameside Slipper
Tameside Slipper
Bright
bosses in Tameside Council's engineering section have come up with an ingenious
device that will save hundreds of thousands of pounds a year and make the
borough's streets safer.
The Tameside Slipper has already attracted interest from other local authorities. Sunderland, Manchester and Bradford City Councils have all placed orders.
The slipper enables the council to reconnect street lights to the electricity supply above ground instead of the council incurring fees charged by electricity companies for reconnection below ground
The money saved will be used to install more street lamps in the borough. And the council has also struck up an agreement with the manufacturer who will give Tameside a royalty for every slipper it sells to other councils.
Cllr Roy Oldham, Executive Leader of Tameside Council, said: "The Tameside Slipper is a brilliant innovation - for the council and for Tamesiders. It embodies everything what we as a council are trying to achieve - better value and greater safety for our residents."
Said head of street lighting Mark Brody: "There are 28,000 street lights in Tameside and we should replace around 700 of those every year. The Tameside Slipper means we can do all the work we need to and it provides us with additional revenue to carry out more repairs or replacements".
It also means a column can be replaced in under an hour.
