Occupational Therapist’s(O.T.) and Occupational Therapy Assistant’s (O.T.A.) carry out assessments with disabled people and their carers to identify their abilities and needs. They work with the disabled person and their carers to find ways of meeting identified needs and overcoming difficulties to create independence. The ultimate aim is to support people to be a sindependent as possible whilst remaining in their own homes and assist carers to manage care as safety as possible.
We assess people of all ages to over come a wide range of difficulties eg help with steps and stairs, or with getting dressed as well as help with personal washing and bathing or getting in/out of bed or on/off chairs and getting to the toilet or other activities of daily living.

How can I get these services?
The first step is to contact Adult Services. You will need to explain what difficulties you are having. You will also be asked for the name of your GP and your date of birth. If you prefer, you can ask a friend or relative to make contact on your behalf.
What happens next?
If you are eligible for an assessment, a member of our team will visit and assess your needs with you. This will give you the opportunity to explain and demonstrate the difficulties you have.
The assessment may take an hour or more, depending on the problems that need to be discussed. If you wish, you can ask a relative, friend or carer to be with you when we visit.
The worker will discuss possible solutions with you. As there is an increasingly large range of options available, you may find that the recommendations vary from your original request.
Will I have to wait long for you to visit me?
We have a huge demand for our service so we may have to put you on a waiting list. However, if your situation is urgent you will be dealt with as a priority.
Is there a charge?
We do not charge for the advice we give and any equipment we provide is free of charge as long as you meet the Eligibility Criteria.
The way that adaptations are funded varies according to the cost. As a general rule, adaptations costing under £1000 (minor works) are provided free of charge. For adaptations costing over £1000 it is necessary to apply for a Disabled Facilities Grant, which is subject to a financial assessment. More information will be given at the time of the visit.
