Life of a Sports Coach

Image of a sports coach with a group of childrenAfter five years of coaching every Thursday in Greswell Primary School, I feel that I have built up an excellent relationship with all the children and the staff .

The children look forward to PE, I certainly do and its great to feel part of an enthusiastic staff, having an effect on the children's health and sporting opportunities.

I arrive at the school usually to a chorus of "Hi Dave" and a number of high fives with children of all ages. It feels great to be wanted. A conversation with the staff, anything going on in the School? Any problems?

The decision has to be made, 'is the lesson inside or out?', and how does this affect my planning. Then it is preparation time. Set out the cones, make sure the area is clear and safe and away we go!

Teaching new skills, seeing the improvement, letting them play, hoping the class manage to get through a lesson without any falling out or tears. It's a great life being a coach.

Conversations with staff at the end of the day and then relax a little before starting again.

After-school clubs are always well attended no matter which sport we choose and the school is gradually participating in more out of school competitions. This has had the positive effect in raising children's self esteem and a pride in the school. It has also been great for me to be involved in other school activities such as training the play leaders, open evenings and organising a "run with your mum" event.

Feeling part of the team is important and to be able to take part in activities such as Christmas plays and invited to school social events is a real bonus.

The benefit of the school sports programme, I feel, is making a real difference at Greswell.
