Disability Sport within Tameside

Image of disabled people enjoying sporting activitiesDisability Sport within Tameside schools is developing well by ensuring that children with various disabilities access to 2 hours of quality P.E. each week. Pupils also have the same opportunities to access after school clubs, community clubs and even sport specific clubs within the borough.

Tameside Sports Development and the School Sports partnership have been working hard to implement Tameside’s talent identification programme- Active8, for children with SEN or disabilities in special and mainstream schools, where we now have 8 pupils supported on the G&T scheme. As part of Active8, we provide a talent identification camp every half-term at various schools within the borough, where invited children receive quality coaching in the 2 chosen sports for the camp and then enjoy friendly competition.

Image of disabled people enjoying sporting activitiesWe have had great success in running the camps like this with 90 pupils attending in the past year. Recently, a talent camp was held at St Thomas More school, focusing on Football and Hockey. We had 40 pupils from mainstream secondary schools attending. Manchester F.A attended the session and 2 pupils were picked to attend the North-west Centre of excellence (football).

Of the pupils already on the Talent G&T programme, two girls are training at the North-west FA Centre of Excellence, one is in the North-West deaf squad and one training at national level.

All this success is in the space of 18 months, and with some schools unaware of Active. Hopefully we can raise awareness of this scheme and highlight the benefits that children can gain from this.
