Greater Manchester Youth Games 2005

We did it again!! Team Tameside did themselves proud this year at the Greater Manchester Youth Games held on the weekend of 11th and 12th June in Bolton, the largest youth sports event ever to be staged in the UK. The borough team grabbed many medals in our most successful Games yet.

The Councils Sports Development Unit took a massive team of 350 young athletes, who have taken part in competitions, trials and then trained for weeks. A massive team of 75 volunteers escorted the young people as Team Managers, Coaches, Assistants and officials. Everyone showed off their talent to 9 other boroughs; Wigan, Salford, Bolton, Bury, Trafford, Stockport, Rochdale, Manchester and Oldham. Many competitions were held and the full list of sports and results follow.

Mayor of Tameside, Councillor Jacqueline Lane and her consort, Dawson Lane, supported the teams, along with England Goalkeeper, David James and Olympic Boxer, Amir Khan.

“It was fantastic sporting weekend showing off what talent Tameside has to offer. This annual event couldn’t happen without the commitment and enthusiasm of all the Team Managers, Coaches and volunteers involved, and of course the athletes! We did it again Tameside, Well done!”
