Greater Manchester Mini Games 2006

Marple Hall High School, in Stockport, played host to the 4th Greater Manchester Mini Games. 5 boroughs, Trafford, Manchester, Oldham, Stockport and Tameside, took part in 9 sporting events including Athletics, Rugby Union, Netball, Girl's Football, Basketball, Gymnastics, Hockey and Tennis and boccia/new age kurling for young people with disabilities.

A magnificent team of 90 children travelled across to Stockport to take part in the inter-borough sports festival for Primary schools, supported by 15 enthusiastic teachers and 10 sports development staff.

7 local primary schools were involved in the event. They were St Mary's Primary, Denton (netball), Mottram Primary, Mottram (gymnastics and Hockey) , Rosehill Primary, Ashton (rugby), Arundale Primary, Hattersely (Football), Manchester Road Primary, Droylsden (tennis), Yew Tree Primary, Dukinfield (athletics), Dowson Primary, Hyde (basketball), Oakdale Primary School, Dukinfield (boccia/new age kurling). All of these schools excelled in recent tournaments ran by Tameside Sports Development Unit and earned their place to represent their borough.

The day proved to be most successful for Tameside, with 3 out of 9 sports teams winning 2nd place. The emphasis of the day was on participation and sporting attitude. There was no prize given out to winners, only to the team that showed Fair Play to others during their matches.

All 8 schools did Tameside proud and were supported by the Mayor of Tameside, Councillor Margaret Sidebottom.

We are now looking forward to next year's Mini Games where we hope to continue our success and uphold our fantastic sporting reputation!
