Ashton Regeneration Project Brief
Ashton Regeneration Project Brief
Tameside MBC Sports Development, Ashton Regeneration and the Tameside Racial Equality Council are working in partnership to deliver a Sport in the Community project.
Through the employment of a Community Sports Development Officer the Sports Development Unit is delivering a number of initiatives in the Ashton Regeneration area which include:
- A Coaching in Schools scheme which is delivered in four primary schools in the Ashton Renewal area. The coaching is undertaken with Key Stage (KS) 1 and 2 pupils focusing on different sporting activities. The officer then encourages all young people from KS 2 to attend after schools clubs which link in with a series of primary school tournaments. This scheme in Ashton allows the Officer to link with other agencies and influence young pupils in terms of knowledge of different sporting activities, health and fitness and citizenship.
- Community sports sessions are established for all ages where participants are encouraged to take part in a variety of different activities. These sessions are delivered at the community facilities in the area and link in with other such sessions in Tameside where competitive opportunities can be provided i.e. community football leagues. All sections of the community are encouraged to participate in these sessions.
- The officer links with the Sports Development Volunteer programme and identifies and develops a number of volunteers who assist in the delivery of the sport in the community project in the area. The volunteers are able to receive the benefits of the Sports Development volunteer programme, which include: a subsidy to attend coaching courses and mentoring from Sports Development coaches.
- The officer has developed links with existing sports clubs as well as working with volunteers to establish new clubs, and a St Peters Sports Forum has also been created to allow local clubs come together and discuss topics such as grant aid and club development. These clubs are encouraged to work within the Ashton Regeneration Area to provide opportunities for local people to take part in a variety of sports.
- Work is being undertaken with hard to reach target groups including Asian women and 50+ to encourage them into sporting opportunities. Partnerships have be formed with other leisure providers i.e. Sports Trust, to produce a number activities for these groups to become involved in and which are sensitive to their needs.
The partners who are involved in the Sport in the Community project will work together throughout the scheme to develop accessible and sustainable networks of opportunities in the area with local people taking a lead through access to education and training.
