Primary Schools' Sport Competitions

The Sports Development & Sports Partnership Primary Schools' competition calendar exploded into action this term with all 3 competitions so far attracting record entries from schools eager to encourage increased participation in sport by their pupils who are continually learning new skills and sports from our coaches working in the highly successful ‘Coaches in School Scheme.’

First up in late September was the Girls Football Indoor 5 A-Side Competition taking place at a number of High School venues. Then came the mixed TAG Rugby competition organised with the support of the 3 local Rugby Union Clubs, Ashton, Dukinfield and Aldwinians. Approximately 300 year 5 & 6 children took part in this fantastic event. This was followed after half term by the Mixed Hockey competition at Astley Sports College umpired by members of Tameside Hawks Junior Hockey Club. Unfortunately the second half of this competition was hit by the Dukinfield weather-twice- and will now have to be held in the new year.

In addition, there has also been more disability competitions than ever!

The incredible support for these events by our primary schools is seen in the table below, showing beyond all doubt that organised team sports are alive and kicking in our primary schools and that the 'Coaching in Schools Scheme' is giving a tremendous number of children the opportunity to take part in a wide range of competitive sport.

Girls Indoor 5 A-Side 11 Canon Burrows Aldwyn
Mixed TAG Rugby 45 Mottram Parochial

Tameside Sports Development is committed to providing high quality competitions with an emphasis on skill development, participation and fun. All competitions are run to National Governing Body rules and regulations and the National Competition Framework for young people has been fully adopted. This ensures that all children are taking part in appropriate competition for their age and ability. A joined up approach with the School Sport Partnership has also given more pupils the opportunity to participate and experience the enjoyment that competition can bring.
