Sport and Physical Activity Alliance
Sport and Physical Activity Alliance - Tameside
The Government continues to support plans for increasing participation in sports and physical activities for everyone across the country in an effort to improve the health and wellbeing of the population.
This drive to increase participation is being led strategically by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport through Sport England's ‘Grow, Sustain, Excel’ strategy and by the Department for Health through their ‘Be Active, Be Healthy’ strategy.
Improvements in Tameside's provision for sport is expanding on the network of clubs, coaches and volunteers and ensures that those with talent have the chance to be successful. In short to help people start, stay and succeed in sport.
Tameside is progressing its work to increase participation through the Sports and Physical Activity Alliance, a strategic network that brings together key partners from across sport, health, education, community safety and the local voluntary and community sectors.
National strategies are shaping Tameside strategies and its important that there are linkages and shared issues coming from initiatives of national agencies such as Sport England, Department of Culture, Media and Sport, Department for Education and Skills, Department of Health and others.
Tameside values the support of the Greater Manchester Sports Partnership who share the same aspirations of maintaining and improving the excellent provision for young people and addressing improved physical activity patterns for adults.
The work of the Sports and Physical Activity Alliance positively contributes to the delivery of the Council's Community Strategy and presents an opportunity for a range of partner agencies and community groups to share and positively act upon agreed policy development, planning and delivery of actions.
To fully utilise the network of partners in the Sport and Physical Activity Alliance, three distinct priorities are being developed to improve the levels of physical activity in Tameside:
- Active Teens delivers new initiatives that cater primarily for young adults aged 16 to 19 years plus some resources being targeted at girls aged 14 to 16 years
- Back to Activity develops new initiatives that cater for adults aged 18 + years who are not as active in sport as they once were or would like to be
- Active Families organises new initiatives that cater for families being involved in sports at the same time and/or the same venue or club
