Tameside Spring Clean Challenge

Each year in Tameside it costs £3million to clean graffiti, deal with fly tipping and pick up litter – a result of anti-social behaviour caused by a small number of people who are breaking the law and not disposing of their waste and rubbish in a socially acceptable way.

Providing more litter bins is not the answer. We already have over 1300 bins – this is more than our neighbouring authorities. There is a cost to each of these bins in terms of installing and maintaining them, but more importantly emptying them regularly.

• Most People don’t drop litter – they do use rubbish bins, or take their litter home with them to dispose of properly.
• Most people don’t’ fly tip, or throw cigarette butts out of the car window,
• Most people do not do graffiti or vandalise street furniture.

Yet all of us have to suffer because the small minority are not prepared to dispose of their waste sensibly or feel they can damage and vandalise other people’s property. 

The Tameside Spring Clean Challenge will see a 3 month concerted campaign to clean up the borough, improve grot spots, remove graffiti and generally prepare the area for the “In Bloom” competition.

Starting in March and running through until the end of May the initiative will look to engage with key groups and stakeholders to raise awareness of litter dropping and to improve the general appearance of the borough.

Spring clean: How can I get involved?

If you, or a group you are involved with, has an idea and want to get involved in cleaning up an area of your neighbourhood, contact the District Assembly office online or by calling 0161 342 3820. We will arrange for an officer to visit you and discuss how we might work with you to help deliver the project. We may be able to help you develop a bid to the Council’s ‘You Choose’ fund which is looking to support community schemes to improve the look of the Borough.
