Improving the Environment
Beyond our recycling work,Tameside has an extensive environmental improvement programme.
Borough Mapping
Our engineers benefit from a computer mapping technique which uses a traffic light coding system to keep track of roadworks. Staff use red, yellow or green markers to show the current condition of each road. For example, road sections marked in red are undergoing immediate work, while green means they are clear.
Recycling Centre
Ensuring that the citizens of tomorrow learn about the benefits of recycling, we have created a busy, combined recycling and educational facility in Ash Road, Droylsden. The Tameside Environment Centre not only processes a wide range of domestic waste but also has a full schedule of school visits planned every term.
Graffiti Hit Squads
Responding swiftly to calls from concerned members of the public our graffiti 'hit squad' aims to clamp down on this perennial problem.
Clean Sweep Team
Our existing street cleaning service has been enhanced with the introduction of an eight-strong Clean Sweep team. Equipped with a specially designed vehicle, the team visits each ward for a day every other week to help boost the cleanliness of our local environment.
Civic Building Refurbishment
The appearance of our borough's prestigious buildings has been enhanced with a £3.5m refurbishment scheme. Denton Town Hall, Dukinfield Town Hall, Hyde Town Hall and Stalybridge Civic/Market Hall have all benefited from the scheme which has included floodlighting to create attractive landmarks at night.
Tameside in Bloom
In 2003 we began a five-year Tameside in Bloom strategy. Far more than a straightforward bid to encourage floral displays, the project aims to enhance the environment through tackling litter, graffiti and vandalism, developing sustainable street environments and promoting greater social responsibility for the care of the borough. In our first year of entry to the regional heats, we secured three top awards including 'best commercial effort' - a testament to the outstanding contribution made by our business community.
20mph Road Safety Schemes for all Schools
To improve road safety and meet one of our public service agreement targets, the council is installing 20mph speed limits with a range of traffic management measures outside all Tameside schools - around 115 of them.
New Rapid Response Team to Tackle Potholes
A two-man squad works on a rota with a half-day in each of 19 wards, concentrating on filling in pot holes and relaying paving in residential areas. The team is extra to the existing roadworks maintenance and repair teams. When the team has carried out a job it is electronically recorded so the council has a clear record of completed work to protect itself against possible compensation claims.
The Slipper Street Lighting Column
An innovative way of replacing lamps on old posts, the Slipper makes a significant contribution to our street lighting programme. Cheap and effective, the Slipper helps us to keep our streets well lit which, in turn, helps our fight against crime.
Removing Street Clutter
Helping to improve the street scene, we have identified and removed more than 100 signs which are no longer necessary.
