Creating Jobs
The drive for job retention and addition continues against a background of service improvements and rising environmental awareness.
M60 Campaign/EDZ
The opening of the M60 orbital link motorway heralded a new era of economic growth for Tameside. The improved transport links have spearheaded a campaign which during the last six years has brought in 4,164 new jobs and safeguarded a further 5,795.A successful £7m Economic Development Zone bid in 2003 is expected to deliver £50m of extra investment in the west of the borough over the next few years.
Employment Partnership
Tameside Employment Partnership works to ensure that as many local people as possible benefit from new job opportunities, particularly those people living in areas of high unemployment. This three-way partnership between ourselves, Jobcentre Plus and Manchester Enterprises provides ongoing help and support for companies with new jobs to offer. Since its formation in 2002 the partnership has ensured that 90% of local jobs have gone to local people.
Assistance with IT/Websites
Our e-tameside business team targets small and medium sized businesses looking to make the most of information technology. In addition to free advice, seminars and access to a free online business directory, grants are available for website creation.
Business Expansion Grants
Local companies looking to expand their operations are able to apply for grants from the Tame Valley Partnership, our local regeneration body. Assistance with applications is available from our Business Outreach Team and Economic Development Unit.
Environmental Thinking
Going green needn't be costly. The non-profit Tameside Business Environment Association (TBEA) encourages companies to benefit from improving environmental aspects of their activities. It helps companies to access available funding streams and can offer grants to small and medium sized businesses for on-site environmental improvements or researching diversification into environmental technologies. TBEA is funded by European Regional Development Funding, Tame Valley Partnership and ourselves.
Bespoke Property Advice Service
Our business support team is able to work closely with companies looking for property or property advice in our region. They have access to our database of properties to match companies' requirements and offer assistance such as linking companies directly into our planning and building control contacts.
e-marketplace
Local businesses are beginning to embrace Tameside's e-government strategy. E-procurement began in March 2004 and more than £1m of orders have already been transacted over the internet, including a reverse auction for rock salt with partner authorities. We are hoping to develop an on-line economy where local businesses can access goods and supplies from each other.
