Healthy Population, Supportive Communities

Joint Mental Health Team

We have been working with local NHS organisations for a number of years to provide a joint approach to mental health care. As a result, we are acknowledged as a Beacon Council for this work.

Safe Parenting Handbook

A new free handbook with tips and guidance for parents has been published by Tameside’s Area Child Protection Committee. The Safe Parenting Handbook is full of advice, ideas and information for parents and carers to help them with the very demanding and sometimes stressful challenge of being a parent. Parents with children in reception classes at primary schools are receiving copies and health visitors are handing out copies to parents of new born babies. A range of issues are tackled such as babysitting, health and safety, coping with a crying baby and positive parenting. The handbook highlights some of the warning signs of particular difficulties and offers helpful tips.

Uptake Campaign for Pensioners

By merging staff from our benefits advice team and the government's pensions service, we have created a specialist team to ensure that pensioners are taking up all the financial assistance available to them. Introduced in spring 2004, the 20-strong team will concentrate on visiting older people individually - checking they are receiving pension credits and whether they can claim benefits from the council such as attendance allowance, carers allowance and council tax benefit.
