By recycling you are:

  • conserving energy and resources
  • supporting local community projects
  • boosting jobs
  • helping make a difference to the community and local environment
  • helping the country meet its targets on recycling and recovery of household waste.

Aluminium Facts

  • The aluminium can recycling process saves 95% of the energy that would be used to produce the same quantity of metal from raw materials.
  • Over 5 billion aluminium drink cans are sold in the UK each year. In 2000, only 42% of aluminium cans were recycled - this means that over 3 billion drink cans, worth £22.5 million, went into landfill.

Glass Facts

  • We throw away 8,000 tonnes of glass a year in Tameside - that’s enough to fill 50 swimming pools.
  • Recycling one bottle saves enough energy to power a television set for an hour and a half.
  • During 2000, the UK recycled 566,563 tonnes of glass, saving more than 2,132,500 mega joules of energy - enough to light up London for more than three years.
  • Glass is 100% recyclable. It can be recycled again and again and again without loss of quality.
