Specific Children Needs

Will care providers be able to cater for my child if they have specific needs?

If your child has specific needs, social, emotional, physical and/or educational, you should discuss this with the provider when you first approach them for a place.

You should be clear about how you want the establishment to provide for your child and if necessary obtain a written agreement of acceptable practice.

All providers should operate an inclusion policy, an acceptable behaviour policy and be able to ensure that your child does not eat foods that you would not find acceptable, either for social, medical or religious reasons.

Written policies and procedures in respect of these issues are required before the provision is registered and are checked by Ofsted Link to External Website when they undertake inspections.

Ask to see a copy of the establishments policies and procedures when you visit.

Many providers offer care to children on one level, others over a number of levels and you should consider this when visiting the establishment.

As always, you are the best judge of what is right for your child, so visit a number of establishments before you make up your mind. Ask others who use the provision for their views and read the reports written on them for an independent view.
