Graduate Teaching Programme
Graduate Teacher Programme - Proposed

Tameside supports the employment based training route for primary and secondary teachers - The Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP). We are a member of the STORM Designated Recommending Body which is an accredited Initial Teaching Training provider for the Graduate Teacher Programme in Greater Manchester.
This is an employment based route into teaching: trainees are based in a school where they are mentored and receive training in partnership with Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU). The one year programmes are personalised to the trainee and lead to the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). The trainee is employed by the school as an unqualified teacher as an additional or supernumerary member of the teaching staff. The programme is ideally suited for career changers who have the skills and potential to train as teachers although some awareness of current educational practices and experience of working with young people is desirable.
To be eligible to apply for a placement on the Graduate Teacher Programme applicants must already have, at the time of application, the following qualifications:
- a UK Bachelor’s degree or equivalent;
- GCSE Grade C or above (or equivalent) in Maths and English; and
- GCSE Grade C or above (or equivalent) in Science (primary applicants only).
Applicants must also have secured the commitment of a supporting school that has agreed to work with them as their lead or host school for most of the placement.
Competition for the limited number of places is intense. Each year the Training and Development Agency (TDA) allocates the number of primary and secondary places available: please refer to the STORM website for current information www.storm-uk.org
.
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) is awarded to trainees who who have met all the ‘Q’ teaching standards:

.
If you are interested in training to become a teacher through the Graduate Teacher Programme and already have the necessary entry qualifications, you can access further information about the programme from the STORM website where information about the annual Open Evening for prospective applicants is also available.
