Three school children were quick on the draw when taking part in a competition run by police.
Ten year-olds, winner Rebecca Jewitt from St John Fisher RC Primary and runners up Opal Harrop, from Denton West End and Rachel Kane from Greenside Lane Primary, Droylsden, visited the police helicopter ar Barton Air Support Unit as part of their prize.
And the lucky trio were also taken to Pizza Hut and a trip to see the horses at Hough End Mounted Unit before being handed vouchers for Tesco Homeplus at Crownpoint.
Children from local primary schools were asked to design a poster showing the dangers if leaving windows and doors open or unlocked.
Chief Inspector Chris Hankinson from Tameside police and the council's head of community safety Lisa Lees judged the finished designs with the winners made into full size posters which will be positioned around Tameside next year.
Orders to tackle crime and disorder
Police officers in Dukinfield and Newton Hyde, in partnership with Tameside Council, are introducing a Dispersal Order to help reduce anti-social behaviour and improve the quality of life for local people.
The Dispersal Order, which will run in these areas for three months from 12th October 2006 until 8th January 2007, provides police with the powers to disperse groups of two or more people hanging around on the streets. Also, youngsters under sixteen, who are suspected of engaging in criminal activity, can be escorted home if they are found loitering in these areas after 9pm. Those who defy the Dispersal Order could find themselves serving a maximum jail term of three months, plus paying a maximum find of £2,500.
The aim of these powers is to prevent people feeling intimidated or harassed by gangs who are causing a nuisance in the local area. They also help protect younger people and children from the risks of being on the streets late at night without a responsible adult.
Inspector Vinny Greener of Stalybridge police post said: "Due to the serious nature of recent incidents in Dukinfield and Newton Hyde involving a number of confrontations between large groups of youths, the decision has been made to introduce a Dispersal Order.
"We are working closely with local partnership agencies to prevent these types of incidents from happening, as we will not tolerate the type of dangerous and violent behaviour we have witnessed on our streets recently. Anyone caught getting involved will face tough action.
"The Dispersal Order will only be used against youths and groups of people who are involved in, or are likely to be involved in, anti-social behaviour. This is just one of a number of steps beign taken to tackle nuisance behaviour and is an opportunity to make local communities safer and friendlier places to live"
Cabinet deputy for co-ordination services, Cllr Margaret Oldham from Tameside Council said: "Groups of young people congregating in the street and causing anti-social behaviour are an issue to Tameside residents. We believe that everyone has the right to feel safe within their homes and communities. This dispersal order is another example of joint working with the police in an effort to resolve problems in these areas"

Domestic abuse is not a new problem. It crosses class, race and culture. What is new is that is is no longer acceptable. Sadly, the incidence of domestic abuse increases over the festive period. Christmas can be a tiring and stressful time for all of us - and there is more alcohol around. For a family where there is abuse - this can lead to greater levels of violence in the home.
Domestic abuse can be literally a life and death issue. One in four women report experiencing domestic violence in their lifetimes and in this country on average, two women are killed every week by a current or former partner. In nine out of ten cases, the children are in the same or next room.
This Christmas, the police in Tameside and the Tameside Domestic Violence Forum are raising awareness of domestic abuse as a problem within our community and to encourage victims and their children to seek support. In the three month period from April to the end of June this year, the police responded to 1,458 incidents of domestic violence and there were 296 crimes recorded as domestic violence - which is a rise compared to last year. We are pleased that local people feel confident enough to report domestic violence to the police because greater reporting helps protect people at risk of violence in their own homes. Part of our domestic abuse campaign this Christmas will join with our awareness raising of alchohol and its links to increased violence.
Chair of the Domestic Violence Forum Cllr Margaret Sidebottom said: "It's sad to think that at a time when most families will be together enjoying the Christmas festivities there will be some out there for whom it will be little more then a living nightmare. Alcohol can certainly play its part so I would always urge people to have fun and enjoy themselves, but please do it sensibly."

STAND (Safer Tameside Against Night-time Disorder) is an multi-agency partnership set up to ensure the borough's streets are free from night-time disorder. In the run up to Christmas the group plan to provide a number of free handouts aimed at providing support for the towns' revellers.

Well managed waste
A pilot waste collection scheme introduced to encourage residents to recycle has proved a big success with nearly 54 per cent of their rubbish now diverted from their black bin to recycling.
The managed collection trial started in July this year covering around 1600 properties in the Mottram Rise area of Stalybridge.
The area was picked because each household has the full range of recycling containers. The scheme has prompted residents to recycle over half the rubbish they were throwing away.
Under the new system residual (rubbish you can't recycle) waste and cardboard are collected one week and other recyclables the next week. The paper collection service remains every eight weeks.
Projections have indicated that if managed collections were introduced in other areas and all performed as well as the trial it could potentially save the authority up to £1.3M.
Executive member for environmental services Catherine Piddington said: "As a council we are coming under more and more pressure to look at ways of improving our recycling rates.
"It's not something we can simply ignore because if we don't act know we will all suffer in the near future because the government will be looking at financially penalising us for failing to increase our rates.
"That's why it's imperative we all try to do what we can to recycle, not only to safeguard our future but the future of our children and grandchildren."

Scouts cash boost
Tameside scouts were prepared for good news when they met up with councillors to receive a massive £32,000 to help with next year's centenary celebrations.
Scout representatives from the area met up with council leader Cllr Roy Oldham, the mayor, Cllr Margaret Sidebottom, the District Assembly chairmen and others to collect what is believed to be the single biggest donation of its kind across the country.
The money will be split between the borough's five scouting districts and will ensure they will be able to attend the Centenary World Jamboree next year as well as provide the movement with much-needed support for next year's centenary celebrations.
Scouting representatives thanked the council for their generous support and called upon other councils up and down the country to show the same level of commitment to their local group.
Cllr Roy Oldham, Tameside Council's Executive Leader, said: "It is with great pleasure that we hand over such a large amount to our local scouting movement as a sign of our appreciation of the excellent work they do for the community.
"This money will go a long way to funding next year's activities and help them to continue their worthwhile work in giving youngsters skills and experiences they can carry through to adult life. The scouting movement is famed for teaching youngsters invaluable life skills such as respect for others and offering help to those who need it - traits all our youngsters should learn. It will also teach them self-discipline, unselfish hard work and a chance to make a real difference to their own and others' lives."
County Commissioner for Scouting in Greater Manchester, John E. Smith commented: "The contribution from Tameside Council for our centenary year celebrations is fantastic both for our local celebrations and particularly for our 25 chosen representatives from Tameside attending the World Jamboree in August 2007 at Highlands Park in Essex, where 40,000 Scouts from virtually every country in the world will be in attendance.
"There will be many celebrations throughout 2007 for Scouts and many will attend a special camp at our county campsite, Linnet Clough in May next year where over 1,500 campers are expected plus another 600 day visitors.
