Ashton

* Green flag award
Oxford Park has been awarded the prestigious Green Flag with high praise for its community links. The Green Flag is a symbol of a well managed, quality green space and the award is testament to the dedication of council staff working in partnership with the community. The bowlers' pavilion has now also been refurbished.
* Environmental improvements
Improvement works to Waterloo Park have started with new fencing and path works. While the first phase of floral improvements has now begun around Hurst Cross with floral baskets along Lees Road/Queens Road. And, supported by Smallshaw Hurst Partnership, there has been a large-scale pruning of highway trees in the Hurst area. The aim is to lighten up the streets to improve residents' safety.
* Firework display
Ashton District Assembly is holding its fourth Annual Fair and Firework Display at Richmond Street Playing Fields on November 5 - fair from 6pm and firework display from 8pm.
* Young people's activities
The Cedar Centre is now open and has got off to a flying start with young people's activities already established. There was also a successful ‘Fun Day' in Cedar Park on August 31, which helped to celebrate achievements within the park.
* Garden competition
Ashton District Assembly once again held its popular garden competition. The competition trophies, certificates and prizes were presented at a reception at Ashton Town Hall in July.

Denton and Audenshaw

* Awards
The Green Flag Award scheme, the national standard for parks and green spaces run by the Civic Trust, has been awarded to Victoria Park, Denton, Ryecroft Hall Grounds, Audenshaw, and Denton Cemetery. The Civic Trust have also awarded a Green Pennant to Haughton Green Playing Fields and the Friends Group. The Assembly is working towards establishing a Green Flag quality park in each ward and in Dane Bank the ward councillors have helped establish a Friends of Granada Park with the aim of achieving a Green Flag.
* Band Stand
The restoration of Denton Historic Bandstand was marked with an official opening event in June. The Denton Local History Society added much to the occasion by researching and providing display board information and school teaching packs. The park now boasts a full series of Saturday band concerts continuing through September.
* Street cleansing campaign
Litter and dog fouling remain one of the issues raised in complaints by local residents and the Assembly's ‘Make a Space' street cleansing project and its ‘Not on My Street' campaigns continue to reduce the problem.
* New sports area
The Assembly has been working in conjunction with the Denton South Partnership which has overseen the completion of a new multi sports games area at St John Fisher School, the creation of a Community Garden at Yew Tree and the provision of new play equipment at Haughton Green Playing Fields.
* Art display
A celebration of schools' art work was recently held at Denton Town Hall where framed examples of the pupils work from nineteen schools were on display. Each pupil was awarded a certificate of merit from the Assembly's Chair, Cllr Margaret Downs.

Droylsden

* Flower power
To mark the centenary of the Scout Movement, a new flowerbed was created and installed on Ashton Road, Droylsden, Other flowerbeds throughout the town were also redesigned this year and there are now double the usual number of floral displays in Sunnybank Park.
And a new planting scheme in Field Street has brought a welcome splash of colour to the pedestrianised road.
* Garden Competition
Droylsden District Assembly once again held its popular garden competition. The competition trophies, certificates and prizes were presented at a reception at Droylsden Football Club in July.
* Medlock Street improvements
Both the play area and teen shelter at Medleck Street are well used by children of all ages and the DA has planted numerous varieties of new trees in the Medlock Street area.

Dukinfield

* Statue
Dukinfield's heritage was marked by the unveiling of a statue of Colonel Robert Duckenfield, one of the North West's staunchest supporters of Cromwell. He was Lord of the Manor and lived at the now demolished Dukinfield Hall.
* Senior Citizens' Party
The town's Senior Citizens' Party took place once again at the Dukinfield Town Hall with the 300 guests enjoying bingo, raffles and entertainment after being wined and dined.
* Civic Trust Award
All the hard work transforming the land at Town Street by the Tame Valley Green Community Group, supported by the District Assembly, has paid off. Proud members of the group were awarded a Green Pennant by the Civic Trust for their efforts.
* Campaign success
The District Assembly continues to reduce the problems of both litter and dog fouling through its environmental ‘Make a Space' and ‘Not on My Street' campaigns.
* Park's future
The District Assembly's strategy to improve the facilities at Dukinfield Park moved a stage further with the establishment of the ‘Dukinfield Parks Friends Group'. The group, along with the DA, are busy commissioning a master plan for the park's future. The park itself has been the venue for a series of June and July Sunday afternoons band concerts.
* Music festival
The District Assembly has once again supported the Dukinfield Music Festival which took place at the beginning of August.

Hyde

* Park Award
Hyde Park has been awarded a Green Flag thanks to the hard work and dedication of District Assembly staff. Judges, who visited in May, were impressed by the standards achieved within the park and staff were invited to an awards ceremony.
* Splendid Weekend
Splendid Weekend was held on July 28 and 29 this year and again pulled huge crowds into Hyde Park. Stars such as the Manchester Camerata, Jon Christos and the Commitments headlined the shows, entertaining an estimated 4000 people. Hyde District Assembly donated almost £40,000 to ensure this year's event matched the quality entertainment provided in previous years.
* Play day
Hyde Park hosted Tameside's Play Week event this year and fantastic sunshine helped bring in families who participated in a mixture of traditional and modern play. Circus skills, skateboarding and pottery making took place around the floral gardens, while dancing and music centred around the restored pavilion.
* Free concerts
Hyde District Assembly staged a very successful series of recitals in Hyde Town Hall and Hyde Park. These free concerts featured a variety of artists and brass bands and were very well attended despite the problematic summer weather. Two further concerts will be staged in the town hall on November 24 - Tribute band : Bootleg ABBA - and on December 15 - The Houghton Weavers with Mossley Band. Longdendale & Hattersley

* Scouting commemorated
In celebration of 100 years of Scouting, Longdendale District Assembly designed and constructed a commemorative floral display on Mottram Moor. The display depicted in detail the scouting emblem by employing the imaginative use of coloured foliage. Local and regional scouting leaders, who joined council officials at the unveiling, expressed their thanks at the support provided by the District Assembly.
* New play areas
Two new play spaces have opened in Hattersley. Local residents have worked tirelessly alongside the District Assembly and Hattersley Neighbourhood Partnership to secure these much needed facilities. Children made the most of glorious sunshine to enjoy an afternoon of fun which accompanied each of the official openings.
* Park improvements
Catnap Park in Broadbottom recently benefited from a £17,000 refurbishment funded by the District Assembly. Residents can now relax on new benches set in an elevated garden which is bordered by decorative fencing and attractive shrubs.

Mossley and Stalybridge North

* Music festival
Mossley Music Festival was again held over the August Bank Holiday this year, but on it's new site facing Mossley Hollins School. The District Assembly have assisted organisers with their relocation and crowds of over four thousand were expected to flock to the three day event, which featured more than 40 live bands, 40 DJ's, a fun fair and circus acts.
* Make over
The District Assembly has recently completed a £45,000 refurbishment of the George Lawton Hall frontage. Improvements include the Mill Girl statue, traditional style stone paving, new seating and improved access facilities.
* Mini olympics
District Assembly staff are currently assisting with organising this year's Mossley Mini Olympics. The games, aimed at family orientated entertainment, will see children aged 7 to 11 compete in a variety of sports. The day will also provide face painting and a family barbecue.

Stalybridge

* Games area
A new multi use games area at Stamford Park was opened in July. The sports facility, designed and built with the help of District Assembly staff, includes two all-weather football pitches and a tennis court.
* Special visitors
A special day in Stamford Park greeted our visitors from Belarus this year. The group was entertained by Circus Fantastic, before enjoying an ice cream each and playing crazy golf. The District Assembly looks forward to entertaining this very special group again next year.
* Missing men honoured
A moving ceremony held in Stalybridge Civic Centre saw local author Kate Booth unveil her book ‘The Missing Men of Stalybridge'. The event was attended by local dignitaries and families of ‘the missing men', who heard a reading of names from the book followed by prayers at Stalybridge War Memorial in remembrance of local men whose names do not appear on the traditional Roll of Honour.
* In bloom
Both Cheetham Park and Stamford Park played an important part in this year's Britain in Bloom competition, and both impressed the judges with fantastic floral displays and improvements to pathways, signage and fencing.
