Age Concern Tameside

Our aim is simple - to help you make the most of life.

Below is an outline of the service Age Concern Tameside can provide for older people and for those caring for older people. For more information please contact us by one of the methods listed below or call into out offices between 9.30am - 4.30pm Mondays to Fridays.

  • Activities
    A wide ranging and varied program of physical, craft based and recreational activities is available at our centre in Ashton-under-Lyne. Further venues are to be developed across the borough.
  • Befriending
    This service provides a volunteer befriender for older people who are lonely or socially isolated.
  • Carers' Drop-In
    Provides respite support for the carers of older people or for older people who are carers of those under 55. Whilst the carer can enjoy a respite break, the cared for is able to take part in activities and maintain social contact whilst being supported by a care worker.
  • Community Social Groups
    The groups provide older members of the community with a warm lunch, a range of activities and opportunities for social contact. At some venues it is possible to attend part of a session for a particular activity only. Groups run on different days at different locations throughout the borough.
  • Counselling and Loss Service
    For those aged 54+ living in Tameside or Glossop, this service provides support with issues such as bereavement, major loss such as the loss of a limb or a job, coping with terminal illness or the on-set of dementia.
  • Day Trips
    A small team of volunteers organises regular trips out to places of interest.
  • Dementia Social Groups
    Specialised Community Social Groups for those in the first and second trimesters of dementia, providing quality activities for those with dementia and an opportunity for their carer to take a break.
  • Falls Prevention
    A service which has won awards, it helps to reduce the number of fallers, support those who do fall and use the knowledge of local communities to tackle the causes of falls.
  • First Call
    To help to keep your home safe and secure the First Call handymen can help with small jobs around the house.
  • Hospital Aftercare
    For people aged 59+ the service can provide immediate and flexible short-term support following discharge from Tameside General Hospital.
  • Information and Advice
    Specialist support on a wide range of issues such as benefits, debt, consumer rights or simply explaining or assisting with something you don't quite understand.
  • Refreshment Bar
    A variety of warm and cold light refreshments is available daily from 10.00am - 2.30pm at the activities centre in Ashton-under-Lyne.
  • Sitting and Support
    Our service offers enabling support in their own homes to users of 54+. The service can also be used to give respite for carers.
  • St Peter's Day Centre
    Offers friendly support to people with a diagnosed functional mental health problem through a wide ranging program of activities designed to promote independence.
  • Shops
  • Our good-as-new shops in Ashton, Denton, Hyde and Mossley are always pleased to receive donations of unwanted goods.
  • Trading Company
    Age Concern Tameside Trading Limited provides general insurance products.
  • Volunteering Opportunities
    Our work is made possible by the unstinting support of around 250 volunteers who have been interviewed and provided appropriate references. All volunteers are supported by a paid member of staff and are trained as appropriate for the role they undertake. We are always keen to hear from people interested in volunteering with the charity.
