Road Winter Damage Repairs 2011/12

Road Winter Damage Repairs 2011/12

Following last winter’s severe weather which was experienced over large areas of country, the Department for Transport made available additional funding to each local highways authority based on their total road length.

For Tameside MBC, this totalled £457,925. This is additional funding to the on going highway maintenance works budgets.

In order to focus the funding to achieve the best value for money on a long term basis, the resultant damage, the location of the damage and opportunities to built future resilience were assessed. The result of this assessment was that a programme of major repairs and resurfacing works was identified and implemented.

Repairs have taken place over much of the borough focusing on;

  • roads that carry a high proportion of large goods vehicles and buses
  • exposed areas
  • roads at risk of accelerated deterioration should we experience another severe winter

Roads identified included:

  • Arundel Street
  • Ashton Hill Lane
  • Ashton Road
  • Audenshaw Road
  • Broadway
  • Cotton Street West
  • Dewsnap Lane
  • Higham Lane
  • Katherine Street
  • Lily Lanes
  • Lodge Lane
  • Micklehurst Road
  • Mill Lane
  • St Albans Avenue
  • Talbot Road
  • Tame Street
  • Werneth Low Road
  • Windmill Lane

These works are scheduled to be completed by the end of 2011.

In addition to repairs and resurfacing works, we have looked at innovative solutions to improving the condition and resilience of our roads. Over the last six months we have undertaken a programme of repairs utilising a proprietary infra-red repair system. This system heats the damaged road surface and with the addition of a small proportion of new material, enables the surface to be re-profiled without the need for large scale excavation and reduces the amount of new, energy intensive, material needing to be delivered to site.

In addition to the Department for Transport funding, Tameside MBC has made available further additional funding to help improve the condition of our roads. An additional £318,000 has been made available, which in conjunction with the Department for Transport funding has helped us make meaningful improvements to our network.
