John Rutherford, Tameside Employment Partnership
“The organising of this event has probably taken about between 6 and 9 months to organise. It’s an annual event and it’s a partnership between Job Centre Plus, the Local Authority who I work for and Connexions, and it’s an event where we try and get as many employers along with live vacancies. Employers shouldn’t really come to the event unless they have at least ten live vacancies at the event. We’ve checked today’s actually, and on today’s event we’ve got a minimum of 568 live jobs, plus whatever Job Centre Plus have brought along with them today so. This year we’ve had a new way of promoting it actually. We’ve had a website that’s been up and running for the last two weeks that people can check on the events, see which employers are coming along and what vacancies are going to be at the event.”
Dylan Billows, Academy of Hospitality, Great Britain
“As we’re a hotel group, it’s across the hotel industry so it’s anything from housekeeping, front of house reception area, so to start off with we’ve got about 55-60 vacancies run on the course and we’re running it every three months and hopefully there’s a possibility that once you qualify with us you’ll get a job. This is my first time to this event and at the moment it seems to be getting very busy indeed so I think yeah it’s been very well organised indeed.”
Music
Stephen Bridgehouse, Tameside Council
“We’ve given lots of advice in terms of applying for jobs with the Council, keeping an eye on the job sheet and things like that and so far it’s pretty good I mean it’s been very, very right from when the doors opened. I mean the doors actually opened quite early and we’ve had a lot of interest, we’ve had a lot of people asking us some very deep and searching questions so at the moment we’re coping with most things that are being thrown at us. What it does is gives us an understanding of you know the type of people that are out there and some of the problems that people are experiencing. I mean we’ve had a wide range of people who’ve have come along. Some have been in work for thirty years and then suddenly they find themselves without a job so you know it’s difficult for people and I think what we have to be able to do is empathise. It’s very easy for those of us who’ve been in employment for quite a while to forget what it’s like.”
Joanne Fogg, Tameside Training Consortium
“I’m actually here as part of Tameside Training Consortium and we’re trying to encourage people going into the Care Sector to actually increase the amount of younger people, and older people to access a career and understand that care is a very worthwhile career. There’s been quite a lot of older people, mature people who’ve said obviously because of the economic downturn that they’re interested in a change of career and I think that’s really nice because predominantly the care sector is supported by a lot of younger people and I think it would be nice to offset that with some mature staff coming through.
I think it’s been publicised extremely well and I think as a Care Ambassador it’s been really nice to be involved in it purely and simply because it heightens people’s awareness that there are jobs available in what is a very difficult time but also showing people that there is a chance to diversify their talents into other areas of work.”
Music
Joanne Needham and Jeannette Smith, Bennett Staff Bureau
“Yeah we’ve seen some good people already.”
“You were saying it’s been a lot better than last year.”
“Yeah, we’ve had some good candidates up to now.”
Music
“How has coming to the Jobs Fair helped you?”
“It’s got us out there hasn’t it, it’s got our name about you know Bennetts recognised a bit more yeah”
Music
“Are you coming back next year?”

Attendees Comments
“Yeah I’ve just enrolled for a couple of things so hopefully something will come up and I can get back into work”
“There’s quite a lot in there and quite a lot of information and a lot of people asking questions.”
“It’s quite useful for people like looking to seeing what is available and what they’ve not previously thought of I mean there’s also stuff like the Army as well which is available so it gives you a good idea of what jobs are there”.
“It opens up to a lot of things you never thought about, you know walking round and people are really helpful”.
