As you can see, work has commenced on the restoration of our historic Market Hall which was gutted by fire in May 2004. Contractors employed by Tameside MBC have started the enabling works to allow the main contract to follow on and the work is expected to be completed by late Spring 2008.
The image below shows an artist’s impression of the finished building, which will encompass many of the ideas raised by members of the public and by market traders during the consultation process.

The completed Hall will feature a new basement area for the location of essential plant including water storage facilities for the sprinkler system and waste management arrangements and will also include the creation of a mezzanine level.
These developments will maximise the retail space at ground floor level enabling a traditional style market hall layout to be accommodated within the newly restored building, which will be created within the original perimeter walls, which have been saved.
