Cenotaph East - Cenotaph North

Werneth Low Country Park

Viewfinder Series No.1

Cenotaph View Looking North

Standing at the cenotaph with your back to the side which reads 'The Great War 1914-1919'. You can see the range of views between Hartshead Pike and Parish Church (Mottram in Longdendale)

Your location at the war memorial is 240 metres (787ft) above sea level and the direction of view is North. The distances from the cenotaph are recorded in Kilometres and in brackets Miles.

The foreground is mainly residential development with the occasional industrial site. The background hills and moors are the south Pennines - the backbone of England. Using the view finder look far left toward Hartshead Pike. On clear days its brown stone tower can easily be seen. Start looking right and just below the horizon is Hough Hill, 244 metres (800ft) above sea level, overlooking the town of Stalybridge.  Continue looking right and you will see the hills of Wharmton, 342 metres (1.537ft) above sea level and Alphin 468 metres (1.537ft) above sea level. These hills stand above the Tame Valley on the approach to the Saddleworth area.

Looking further right, the hill on which the earthworks of Buckton Castle stand can easily be identified by its large quarry scar.  Next to it Harridge Pike 395 metres (1295ft) above sea level rises above the Millbrook area.  The next hill, Wildbank, 399 metres (1,309ft) overlooks Stalybridge Country Park.  Another hill scarred by quarrying is Harrop Edge just to the left of Hattersley.  Above Hattersley the large moorland areas of Shaw Moor and Hobson Moor fall gently towards the Longdendale valley.  At the very right the ancient parish church of Mottram in Longdendale can be seen.

Cenotaph View Looking East

Standing at the cenotaph with your back to the side which reads 'They willingly left the unachieved purpose of their lives in order that all life should not be wrenched from its purpose', You can see the range of views between Mouselow and Windy Harbour

The panorama is mainly rural and looks towards Derbyshire.  The large hills in the background are the continuation of the southern Pennines.  Starting from the far left the Longdendale valley is clearly seen.  Mouselow 256 metres (840ft) above sea level rises steeply above the village of Padfield in Derbyshire.

Looking further right is the dark silhouette of Cockhill, 426 metres (1399ft) above sea level.  Below the hill tops in the centre of view is Shire Hill.  Below that is the large town of Glossop.  Dominating all this is the huge moorland area of Bleaklow with its summit of Bleaklow Head at 633 metres (2077ft) above sea level.

Further right Slack Edge and Cown Edge are clearly defined.  In the background Kinder Scout, 636 metres (2088ft) above sea level is the highest hill in the southern Pennines. On the far right Windy Harbour is the Eastern boundary of the Country Park.
