Werneth Low/Godley Circular

A 5 kilometre (3 mile) walk around Werneth Low and Godley Green Common. Start from the Lower Higham Visitor Centre car park.

• Leave the car park area of the Lower Higham Visitor Centre by walking towards the notice board and kissing gate by the wooden gate at the top of the car park.  Continue uphill through another stile toward the cenotaph.
  
  
• Walk past the view finder then cenotaph (on your right) and continue left following the path steeply down towards Higham Cottages.
  
  
• At the bottom of the hill go through the stile, turn left in front of Higham Cottages and continue down to the main road (A560 Mottram Old Road).  Turn left and after 50 metres (55yds) turn right across the road and continue walking down Green Lane.
  
  
• After passing on your right the houses named ‘The Hawthorns, Abbotsford and Godley Farm’ turn right at the junction of paths and continue straight ahead passing the houses named 'Ashwyn and Albert Farm'.  Go through the small gate on the left and continue down hill on a hedged path.
  
  
• Continue along to the bottom of the path to the small wooden gate.  Turn immediately right and continue straight ahead through Brook Fold Farm.
  
  
• After passing the farm buildings cross the stile by a gate and go to the far end of a long meadow.~
  
  
• Cross the small stream by the suspended piping.  Climb up the valley side then turn right along the side of the wooded clough.  Continue walking for 200 metres (220yds) then turn half left across the large field.
  
  
• After going over the wooden stile on the far side, continue uphill following the path around to the left along a narrow lane.
  
  
• Pass Greenside Farm and at the junction with the A560 (Mottram Old Road) turn left then after a short way turn right down a cinder track and continue walking towards Low End Farm.
  
  
• At the end of the track turn right up along the narrow lane and after a short way turn right onto another track.
  
  
• Turn left through the stone stile and go steeply upfield to find a stone stile at the top.  Continue up a narrow track.
  
  
• After walking along the edge of the Windy Harbour Car Park, past the picnic area, turn right at the corner of the buildings.  Continue through the stile and walk along the path signposted for cenotaph.  Go over a stone stile and after passing Pipers Clough follow the path around to the left toward the cenotaph, crossing a horse track with stiles on the way.
  
  
• At the cenotaph all the route just walked is visible.  Return to Lower Higham Visitor Centre as on the uphill route.
