Millennium Volunteers

Millennium Volunteers is a UK wide initiative to encourage, support and recognise 16-24 year olds who volunteer their time for the benefit of others. The slogan is:

"Build on what you are into"

The idea behind Millennium Volunteers is to let young people decide what they want to do in their own locality, building on their interests and connecting with local issues that they really care about.

The young person is expected to complete 200 hours of volunteering in their activity. For recognition of their work they will receive a Millennium Award of Excellence, which will be signed by the Secretary of State. The Award is a national recognised Accreditation, which can be used as post of Further Education if they wish.

Here in Tameside we have just under 40 young people from all different backgrounds on the Millennium Volunteers Scheme, some work at Tameside Hospital, local drama groups, the local charity shop and some youth clubs.

My name is Andy Moores and I am the Tameside Millennium Volunteers Project Worker, based at Tameside Young People's Centre, Duke Street, Denton. I work every Tuesday, 10.00am - 5.00pm but can arrange visits at other times.
