Welcome to the Wellness Centre

Thursday, 05 March 2020

After a year of construction, the Denton Wellness Centre has opened its doors. In celebration, we joined together last weekend with members of the public and those involved in the Centre’s creation for a fantastic opening ceremony, featuring performances from Tameside Music Service, a tour of the facility, speeches and plaque unveilings.

What’s especially pleasing is that this day has come earlier than we expected. Thanks to the outstanding progress made by everybody involved in the construction and fitting out of the Denton Wellness Centre, including Network Space, Willmott-Dixon and Pozzoni Architecture, our residents will be able to benefit from the wonderful facilities on offer ahead of schedule. Built on brownfield land in the heart of Denton, the state-of-the-art centre includes an eight-lane, 25 metre, competition swimming pool with room for 150 spectators and a learner pool; a spa area including sauna, steam and relaxation facilities; a fitness suite; and a ten-pin bowling alley. The Wellness Centre is also the jewel in the crown on our multi-year, £20 million investment in Tameside’s health and leisure estate, a programme that has previously brought us the Sky High Adventure Centre in Droylsden, the iTrain facility in Dukinfield, Total Adrenaline in Longdendale, and after some unforeseen and unavoidable delays, the beginning of the construction of Hyde Pool.

This programme of investment has been the result of the realisation that we needed to think differently about how we provide and market our leisure facilities. All of the facilities we’ve opened have presented their own unique and commercial offer, allowing us to push against the tide of austerity to provide better services on a more financially sustainable footing.

In that vein, our vision for the Denton Wellness Centre is about creating a welcoming space for everybody, including people from outside Tameside, and those who might not see themselves ever walking into a leisure centre. As well as the usual health and exercise facilities, the building also contains meeting rooms, free Wi-Fi, a children’s soft play area and multi-use studio spaces. The traditional foyer has been replaced with a “social interaction zone” that can be used to both host events such as history talk or music sessions, or as a relaxation and reading area. Even the roof has been put to good use, as we’ve transformed it into a sensory garden and open air meeting area. We’ve also worked closely with our contractors and residents to ensure that disabled-friendly, dementia-friendly and autism-friendly design has been used throughout the building.

But I think it’s really important to say as well that the benefits of the Denton Wellness Centre go far, far beyond the financial return. The building also has incredible potential to encourage a healthy living revolution among our residents.

I’ve heard it said often that if exercise were a drug, every person in the world would be lining up to receive it and every doctor would be falling over themselves to prescribe it. The father of modern medicine, the Greek Hippocrates, described exercise as “the best medicine”. He was right then and he’s still right now. Our own studies in Tameside show that significantly increasing our levels of activity could prevent 1,344 new diabetes cases, 60 new breast cancer cases, 21 new colorectal cancer cases and 73 new incidences of coronary heart disease a year. The impact that this could have, not just in terms of the quality of life of our residents but the money that could be saved in health and social care as well, cannot be underestimated.

The Denton Wellness Centre is therefore not just the crown jewel of our leisure investment, but the standard bearer for encouraging active and healthy living. By bringing together leisure and social activities, we’re putting into our residents’ hands the tools they need to live longer and happier lives. We have an absolutely exceptional facility on our hands, and I am confident it will make a huge and lasting difference. A healthier and better Tameside is within our grasp.
