Volunteers Are Needed at all Tameside Libraries

TechKnow Buddies will help people who struggle to use computers and digital technology by offering Buddy sessions in libraries and some remote support via telephone.

Buddies will help with a particular problem, encourage people to use more and different digital tools and help to build the confidence customers need to take their next steps with digital technology.Image volunteers flyer

TechKnow Buddies don’t need to be a computer whizz but if you’re a calm, supportive and patient person who enjoys working with people this role will be extremely rewarding.

TechKnow Buddies will also have an opportunity to update their own skills, experience working in a customer facing role and being part of a team.


What do I need to be a TechKnow Buddy?


Do I need to be an IT Expert?

Not at all, commitment to helping people learn the basics of getting online and supporting them to make progress is key to becoming a TechKnow Buddy.
  • Good basic skills on laptops, smartphones and tablets.
  • Confidence using the internet, email and common office applications.
  • Friendly, approachable and patient in supporting digital beginners.

What skills and personal qualities are needed?

  • Confidence in using technology and ability to explain things in a simple manner.
  • Ability to encourage and motivate.
  • Reliability and willingness to volunteer for at least one or two hours per week.
  • Commitment to encouraging people in next steps, e.g. Learn My Way / iDEA.
  • Enthusiasm for developing own skills and confidence.

Will there be training?

  • Initial training required for the role will be given
  • Further training to develop digital skills will be encouraged
  • Related training may be available

What will I get from volunteering?
