Council Postpones Non-essential Construction Work

Press Release: 25/03/2020

ALL non-essential council construction work has been suspended to protect workers and the local community while also diverting resources to vital services.

However, essential and emergency highways and infrastructure work to keep transport and services running - such as winter gritting, streetlighting, gully cleansing and pot hole risk management  - will continue. This also includes the construction site at the Ashton Transport Interchange junction which is key to the transport network.

Utility companies will also continue to carry out essential works to ensure they continue to provide vital services to homes and businesses.

Tameside Council Executive Leader Cllr Brenda Warrington said: “We’ve reviewed what works are essential and what can be put on hold until a later date so we can continue our efforts to protect workers and the local community while diverting resources to keep vital services running. Where work is continuing, we have implemented appropriate social distancing measures and public health advice.

“I want to say a huge thank you to all the workers who are on the frontline continuing to deliver essential services and to those workers who have readily taken on different roles in other services to help out. For example, we have staff from our highways and engineering team now helping out in bereavement and waste services to help us to keep those key services running.

"The dedication, hard work and commitment of our staff in these difficult times is quite incredible and a shining example of public service.”
