Northern Lights shone bright for Ashton’s festive extravaganza

Press Release: 23/11/2022

Northern LightsOn Saturday 19 November, Ashton town centre was lit up and positively glowed with festive spirit and sparkle as over 5,000 people including local community groups, residents, performers, artists and businesses all came together for the Northern Light’s Lantern Parade and the start of Tameside Christmas celebration events.

The Northern Lights lantern parade brought with it an absolutely electric atmosphere and the town centre was buzzing with festive cheer. Live performances onstage helped to build the Christmas vibes ahead of the parade setting off with live music from local performers and Ashton’s Cadet Band giving the gathering crowds a seasonal musical treat.

The spectacular light filled parade took centre stage as it wound its way through Ashton’s streets which were lined with people and residents of all ages who had come along to watch and join in with the festive celebrations.

A true showcase of local community efforts the parade was led by the magnificent Spirit of the North figurehead made by Cabasa CIC and community groups. The parade consisted of over 1500 people including lantern carriers who had made their own lanterns alongside dancing and musical performers in four beautifully themed sections representing the Spirit of the North, light, water and rainbows.

If the parade wasn’t enough the crowds then watched on and cheered their support as special guest Father Christmas switched on Ashton Christmas lights and lit up the beautiful Christmas tree decorated by school children and Market Hall. He was supported by Tameside’s Civic Mayor Cllr Michael Glover, alongside, the Right Honourable Angela Rayner MP, Tameside Council Executive Leader Councillor Gerald Cooney, Deputy Leader Cllr Bill FairFoull, Assistant Executive Member Culture, Heritage & Digital Inclusivity Cllr Sangita Patel and Ashton Ward Councillors.

Assistant Executive Member Culture, Heritage & Digital Inclusivity Cllr Sangita Patel, said:  “It was an absolutely fantastic event and it was just brilliant to see all the people that came out to enjoy the Lantern Parade and Light Switch on.
