Science Formula for Half-term Fun

Press Release: 06/02/2020

SCIENCE is at the centre of a packed half-term activities programme put together by Tameside Council’s libraries and cultural services teams.

All the Science Extravaganza drop-in sessions feature crafts, games and activities, and are suitable for children aged four to 11. The schedule is: Tuesday, February 18, 11am to noon at Dukinfield Library; Wednesday, February 19, 2 to 3pm at Hyde Library; Thursday, February 20, 10.30 to 11.30am at Droylsden Library and Friday, February 21, 10.30 to 11.30am at Mossley Library.

For nature-lovers, we’ll be celebrating National Bird Box Week on Thursday, February 20, with a drop-in event called Bug and Bird Box Building in Hyde Park (11am to 3pm). Make your own bird or bug box to take home. There’s a charge of £4 per box.

If you want some family theatre, look no further than “Old McDonald and the Three Pigs Plus”.

Ideal for children aged five and over it weaves the well-known story of the Three Little Pigs with the popular song about Old McDonald and his farm. It’s a colourful and fun interactive show, full of props, pop-ups and audience participation.

There are performances at the Astley Cheetham Gallery, Trinity Street, Stalybridge, on Saturday, 22 February at 11,30am and 1pm. Tickets, which are £3 each, are available from www.ticketsource.co.uk/Tameside-mbc.

Also, there will be the usual favourites such as Make Do and Play, and Meet Tommy Atkins (a First World War Soldier) at Portland Basin Museum in Ashton.

Cllr Leanne Feeley, Tameside Council’s executive member for culture, said: “It seems to me that our libraries team has come up with the perfect formula for half-term fun. Their science extravanganza gives youngsters plenty to experiment with.

“Whether you love science or the outdoors there’s something for everyone.”
