Press Release: 12/08/2019

Residents who were evacuated following the fire at mill buildings in Ashton will be able to return back home today (Monday 12 August).

The blaze, which started on Tuesday 6 August, affected several commercial buildings on Oxford Street East. Homes on Gibson Terrace were evacuated, with approximately half of the households staying with friends and family and 23 people being supported in temporary accommodation provided by Jigsaw Homes.

Tameside Council Executive Leader Cllr Brenda Warrington said: “Demolition work has progressed well and electricity has now been reconnected, meaning residents of Gibson Terrace can safely return to their homes.

“Our staff are continuing to contact businesses that were based in the affected building to offer support, such as help to find alternative premises.

“I would like to thank everyone who was involved in the effective and coordinated response to the fire - it reflected great partnership working. I know this has been a difficult time for those residents and businesses affected and we’re continuing to provide support where required.”

Oxford Street East between Portugal St & Cambridge St remains closed however Ashton Canal and towpath are now back open.
