Every care home provided with Covid vaccine in three days

Press Release: 19/01/2021

Riverside Care HomeEVERY care home resident and staff member in Tameside and Glossop has been offered the Covid vaccine to protect the most vulnerable.

Health workers have vaccinated 97% of care home residents who consented with the vast majority done in just three days – the remaining were unable to have the vaccine due to illness or other reasons.

The vast majority of staff have also been vaccinated with those unavailable at the time to receive their jab soon.

It means that the vaccine has been distributed to every one of Tameside and Glossop’s 40 care homes for older adults where around 2,500 people have been vaccinated.

NHS Tameside and Glossop Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) worked quickly and efficiently in partnership with GP-led Primary Care Networks and Tameside Council to arrange care home vaccinations.

The rapid rollout to care homes was made achievable through strong partnership working between the CCG, GPs, Council’s adult social care service and care home staff. Care Home managers and staff worked at pace to ensure all residents consented to the vaccine and recorded this in records with just 48 hours notice.

Due to storage precautions, the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine couldn’t be transported away from care homes, so to ensure that not a drop of the precious resource was wasted, eligible key frontline workers were called in to care home car parks to be vaccinated with any remaining doses.

NHS Tameside and Glossop CCG Co-chairmen Dr Asad Ali and Dr Ashwin Ramachandra said: “Our staff have worked incredibly hard to rollout the Covid vaccine to care homes in Tameside and Glossop and by all accounts this could not have gone any better.

“It demonstrates the strength of partnership working in Tameside and Glossop with everyone pulling together to achieve 97% per cent of care home residents who consented being vaccinated. Care home workers have been so supportive and organised consent to enable it to happen.”

Tameside Council Executive Leader Cllr Brenda Warrington said: “I’m so pleased that every care home resident and staff member was offered this life-saving vaccine in just three days, a phenomenal achievement that will provide protection from coronavirus to our most vulnerable residents.

“The teams involved have really stepped up to deliver and I’d like to thank everyone involved for their excellent and efficient work.

“This adds to the fantastic take up of the Covid vaccine in Tameside and Glossop with more than 19,000 doses administered so far, which will save many local lives and help relieve pressures on our healthcare system.”
