Wonderful winter parade launches Tameside’s festive events

Press Release: 24/11/2021

Northern-Lights-Tameside-Winter-CarnivalTHE fantastic community spirit was even more awe inspiring than ‘Joe the Giant’ who wowed crowds at the Tameside Winter Parade.

Thousands of people from all over the borough came to Hyde to enjoy the event last Saturday night, which was the first of many town centre festive events planned over the next few weeks.

The spectacular parade, created in partnership Handmade Parade using Arts Council funding, featured a magical array of illuminated puppets and lanterns, as well as fantastic entertainment from dancers and bands.

Local schools and community groups were also involved in designing and carrying lanterns, which were symbolic of people’s personal stories, representing who or what has illuminated their lives, and created an atmospheric field of moving light and colour.

horseThe parade culminated in front of Hyde Town Hall, where Father Christmas joined Tameside Civic Mayor Cllr Janet Cooper and Executive Leader Cllr Brenda Warrington for the Christmas lights switch on.

Executive Member Cllr Leanne Feeley, who is responsible for culture, said: “Thank you to everyone involved in the parade as well as everyone who came along for making this such a wonderful, inclusive and fabulous event. There was a joyous atmosphere of fiesta and friendship with everyone smiling, dancing and so very happy – it was just what we all needed and the feedback from the local community has been lovely.

“This was just the start of numerous events taking place in Tameside towns over the next few weeks in the lead up to Christmas. I hope everyone gets a chance to get involved, share the wonderful community spirit and support their town centres and local businesses.”
