Young chefs cook up fun at Ashton Market

Press Release: 11/06/2019

Cooking tasty, healthy food is a vital skill for life – which is why Tameside Council will be running a free Kids Cookery Club over coming months.

A recent taster session (pictured) delighted the palate of the first young participants, so Ashton Market has scheduled the free monthly events to start on Saturday 22 June – and bookings are now being taken for sessions which will run well into 2020, teaching children up to age 12 how to make healthy dishes using only fresh, natural ingredients – including pizzas, veggie burgers and fish cakes.

Traders at Ashton Market have served up 90% of the ingredients for the sessions, which will be delivered by local demo chef Joan Burage. Joan will be bringing years of experience of cooking with communities – working as a demo chef, with local authorities and the NHS, with markets and at events such as the Bolton Food and Drink Festival, running teatime “cook and eat” sessions for families within a disadvantaged community and Big Cook Little Cook sessions in children’s centres, and supporting Age UK in raising awareness of malnutrition amongst older people.

Joan said: “Working with children in the local community can help educate them about nutrition as well as how to cook fresh delicious food, and perhaps also try foods they might not have seen or tasted before. If this helps people to make some small changes and fosters good habits that’s a box ticked for me!”

Cllr Eleanor Wills, Tameside Council’s Executive Member for Population Health, commented: “This will be great fun but it’s also a highly valuable thing for young people to learn to cook. My six- and four-year-old children are very keen mini-chefs, they thoroughly enjoy getting involved in the kitchen. I believe it’s one important way of equipping our children for life and for looking after their health.”

Anyone interested in booking for the sessions is asked to contact Luke Mirfin at Ashton Market, markets@tameside.gov.uk, 0161 342 3268, with the prospective young chef’s name and age, a contact number and/or email address, and the preferred dates.

There will be several 30-minute sessions on each of the days in question: 22 June, 20 July, 17 August, 21 September, 19 October, 23 November, 21 December 2019; and 11 January, 22 February and 21 March 2020.
