Caring for Someone

A Carer is someone who looks after a loved one who cannot manage at home without the Carers help. Many people are employed to provide paid formal care, but when we talk about Carers here, we mean those who provide unpaid and informal care for a loved one.

Parent Carers are a parent of a disabled child. Parents will often see themselves as parents rather than Carers. But their child will have additional care needs and they may be entitled to additional services.

Young Carers are people who perform care activities who are under the age of 18. The person receiving care is often a parent but can be a brother or sister, grandparent or other relative who needs support.

Accessing Help and Support

You are entitled to a Carers Assessment under the Care Act 2014

The Carers Assessment enables us to build a relationship with you and understand how your caring role is impacting you. We can also assess what we can do to help you and the person you care for.

The Carers Centre, based in Ashton-under-Lyne can offer you a safe environment to talk about your caring role and help you work through your worries. We know that your caring role can impact your wellbeing, finances and many other aspects of your life.

We offer time out activities such as Monthly Coffee mornings, where you can meet other Carers and have some time out for you.

If you are unable to get to The Carer’s Centre in Ashton-Under-Lyne for an assessment, we can visit you in your home. Alternatively we offer support over the phone, by email and in your local area. Please discuss your needs with your advisor and a tailored support plan will be put in place for you.

We can offer advice, guidance and signposting to meet the needs of you and the person you care for. We can make sure you get the right support at the right time, to make life feel a little easier.

You can access the Tameside Emergency Carers Card (TEC), Radar Key and other support through our Carers Centre.

Registering for Support

If you care for somebody you can access support by completing the Carers self-referral/registration form. Please contact us to receive a referral form. The form can be dropped into the Carers Centre or sent to us by email.

We offer daily drop-in services:
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 10am – 2pm
Wednesday 9am – 11.30am

You do not need an appointment to speak with an advisor. At the drop-in you can register as a carer, complete a Tameside Emergency Carers Card (TEC) form application, access emotional support, signposting, advice and guidance.

There are a range of support groups in Tameside that can help Carers to seek practical and emotional support and up-to-date information.
